Victoria Hospital

Victoria Hospital, c. 1890. Opened in 1886, the hospital was built and maintained by subscription and fund-raising, started in 1883. The circular wards were called “Butterworth” and “Thursby” after ardent supporters, and on opening the hospital, commemorative medallions and plates were made. The hospital was supported by fund-raising until the founding of the National Health Service in 1948.
